<p><strong>&#8220;Dit was de uitdagende titel van een lezing van mijn  Engelse collega Drayton Bird.  Hij begon deze lezing met het opsommen  van een aantal voorspellingen die achteraf gezien totaal fout bleken te  zijn, zoals:</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Platen betekenen het einde van live optredens</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Film betekent het einde van theater voorstellingen</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>De videoplaat betekent het einde van de cataloog</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>We leven in een beeldcultuur waarin niemand nog  leest </strong></p>
<p><strong><br />
</strong></p>
<p>De onderzoekers van <strong>Gartner</strong> voorspelden in 2002 dat  in <strong>2010</strong> <strong>direct mail</strong> enkel nog  een <strong>reliek</strong> zal zijn uit een ver verleden. Volgens Drayton hoort deze uitspraak  thuis in datzelfde lijstje van belachelijke voorspellingen.</p>
<p>Bird zegt: “Deze foutieve voorspellingen zijn een mooi voorbeeld van  de bekende uitspraak van Nietzsche: ‘Voor een man met een hamer ziet  alles er uit als een nagel.’ Dus als je een <strong>fan bent van online</strong>,  zie jij overal <strong>online toepassingen</strong>. En als reclame je  grote liefde is geloof je steevast in de toekomst van reclame. Als ik  dergelijke voorspellingen lees denk ik altijd aan Mark Twain’s reactie  toen hij in een krantenartikel las dat hij overleden was. Hij schreef  naar de uitgever: ‘De berichten over mijn overlijden zijn sterk  overdreven.’” De cijfers van  de pige van de Post (zie blz 1-2) bewijzen  in elk geval dat het medium <strong>direct mail</strong> zeker <strong>nog  niet dood</strong> is.</p>
<p>Ik sprak erover met <strong>Michiel Casters</strong>, een eminence  grise in ons vak, die in zijn lange carrière als <strong>postorderaar</strong> heel wat nieuwe trends heeft zijn passeren. Dit is de mening van  Michiel.</p>
<p>“Ik geloof in slechts één zekerheid en dat is dat voorspellen  verschrikkelijk moeilijk blijft vooral als het gaat over de toekomst. Ik  ga er van uit dat niets volledig zal verdwijnen net als in de mode.  Vele dingen die vandaag waar zijn zullen dat binnen tien jaar nog zijn.   Ze zullen na een al dan niet lange slaapperiode opnieuw tot leven   worden gewekt door marketers die de oude ervaringen opnieuw zullen  testen en tot de vaststelling komen dat die goede oude tijd nog niet zo  slecht was.</p>
<p>Natuurlijk is het wel iets ingewikkelder: <strong>“de” klant bestaat  niet</strong> . Het <strong>klantenbestand</strong> heeft een <strong>groot  aantal subgroepen</strong> die best op een “eigen” aangepaste manier  zullen moeten benaderd worden. Ik kan niet zonder e-mail en internet,  maar zit niet te wachten op nog meer reclame via mijn p.c. Junkmail  lijkt me momenteel meer via pc dan via de post te komen.</p>
<p>Ik ken niet te veel dames die dagelijks op hun pc zitten te bladeren  bij Neckermann of 3Suisses. Dat is toch niet gezellig?</p>
<p>Ook in België groeit het direct mail volume nog steeds en verdwijnen  volledig zal dit medium nooit. Je kan er gerust in zijn : zolang er  echte marketing mensen blijven opstaan zullen ze willen <strong>testen</strong>….en  zo zullen ze ontdekken dat <strong>schijnbaar afgeschreven media</strong> toch weer <strong>nieuwe kansen</strong> bieden bij <strong>bepaalde  doelgroepen</strong> en voor bepaalde toepassingen.”</p>
<p>Deze zomer organiseerden we in samenwerking met InSites een  marktonderzoek in verband met onze adviesbrief DM update. Uit dat  onderzoek blijkt ondermeer dat <strong>minder dan 30%</strong> van de  lezers het een goed idee zouden vinden om DM update voortaan <strong>enkel  digitaal</strong> te verspreiden. <strong>De mix tussen een gedrukte  versie en een on-line archief blijkt de ideale formule te zijn</strong>.  Het is dus geen of/of verhaal maar een <strong>en/en verhaal</strong>.  De gedrukte direct mail heeft nog een boeiende toekomst voor de boeg.&#8221;<br />

<p><strong>&#8220;C’est le titre, très percutant, d’une conférence donnée  par l’un  de mes collègues anglais, Drayton Bird.  Il a commencé cette   conférence en énumérant un certain nombre de pronostics qui se sont   avérés totalement faux par la suite, comme:</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Les disques sonneront le glas des concerts live</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Le cinéma provoquera la disparition du théâtre</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Le disque vidéo remplacera le catalogue</strong></p>
<p>-          <strong>Nous vivons dans une culture de l’image, où plus   personne ne lit </strong></p>

<p>En 2002, les chercheurs de <strong>Gartner </strong>ont prédit qu’en  2010, <strong>le  direct mail ne serait plus qu’un lointain souvenir</strong>.  D’après  Drayton, ce genre d’affirmation peut parfaitement figurer sur  la liste  des prédictions ridicules.</p>
<p>Drayton Bird: “Ces prédictions erronées illustrent bien la célèbre   phrase de Nietzsche: ‘Pour un homme avec un marteau, tout ressemble à un   clou.’ Quand vous êtes un fan d’internet, vous voyez partout des   applications en ligne. Et si vous adorez la publicité, vous croyez dur   comme fer en son avenir. Quand je vois de telles prédictions, je pense   toujours à la réaction de Mark Twain, lisant l’annonce de son décès dans   le journal. Il a écrit à l’éditeur: ‘Les messages concernant mon décès   sont fortement exagérés.’” Les chiffres du piège de La Poste (voir  pages  1-2) prouvent en tout cas que le médium direct mail n’est  certainement  pas mort.</p>
<p>J’en ai parlé avec <strong>Michiel Casters</strong>, une éminence  grise dans  notre métier, qui a vu passer bien de nouvelles tendances  durant sa  longue carrière dans la <strong>vente par correspondance</strong>.  Voici  l’opinion de Michiel.</p>
<p>“Si j’ai une certitude, c’est bien que le pronostic reste   terriblement difficile, surtout lorsqu’il s’agit de l’avenir. Je pars du   principe que rien ne disparaîtra totalement, exactement comme dans la   mode. Nombre de choses qui sont vraies aujourd’hui le seront toujours   dans dix ans. Après une période plus ou moins longue de sommeil, elles   seront rappelées à la vie par des marketers qui testeront à nouveau les   anciennes expériences et arriveront à la conclusion que le bon vieux   temps n’était pas si mal.</p>
<p>Bien sûr, c’est un peu plus compliqué: il n’existe pas « un » client.   <strong>Le fichier clientèle comporte un grand nombre de sous-groupes </strong>qui   doivent être approchés d’une manière « propre », adaptée. Je n’imagine   pas ma vie sans l’e-mail et internet, mais je ne souhaite pas recevoir   davantage de publicité via mon ordinateur. Je pense que le junkmail   arrive plus par pc que par la poste, pour l’instant.</p>
<p>Je ne connais pas beaucoup de femmes qui feuillettent les catalogues   Neckermann ou 3Suisses chaque jour sur leur ordinateur, car ce n’est  pas  très agréable.</p>
<p>En Belgique, le volume du direct mail continue d’évoluer et ce médium   ne disparaîtra jamais. Soyez-en sûr: tant qu’il y aura de véritables   spécialistes du marketing, ils voudront les tester… et ils découvriront   que des médias apparemment oubliés peuvent offrir de nouvelles chances   chez certains groupes cibles et pour certaines applications.”</p>
<p>Cet été, nous avons organisé en collaboration avec <strong>InSites</strong> une  étude de marché en rapport avec notre <strong>publication DM update</strong>.   Cette étude a révélé notamment que <strong>moins de 30% des lecteurs   estiment que c’est une bonne idée de diffuser le DM update uniquement en   format numérique</strong>. Le mix entre une version imprimée et une   archive en ligne semble la formule idéale. Ce n’est donc pas une   question de ou/ou, mais bien de et/et. Le direct mail imprimé a encore   un passionnant avenir devant lui.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8216;Running a loyalty program becomes &#8216;simple&#8217; if you compare it with  a love affair.  If you take your love seriously, you don&#8217;t go for a one night stand, but for a durable relation.  In a love affair, just like in loyalty programs, it&#8217;s about &#8216;give and take&#8217;. Of course, you have to check out sometimes if your love is &#8216;as hot as ever&#8217;. If that&#8217;s no longer the case, you should talk as open and quickly as possible to resolve it.  Do not all the talking yourself, because if you don&#8217;t &#8216;listen&#8217;, there will be no &#8216;understanding&#8217; in your relation.  Make sure you to surprise your partner so now and then, but be aware : don&#8217;t exagerate, your love might become suspicious <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>OK, I know, your loyalty program is polygamie, not monogamie.  You want a durable relation not with one but with as many as possible customers.  So this is what the above means in terms of a customer loyalty program :</p>
<p>* <strong>inform </strong>: keep up the contact with your loyal customers.  Enhance existing, intrinsic contact points (such as a bill, a delivery note,&#8230;) and create additional positive contact points (like a newsletter, a customer magazine, a blog,&#8230;)</p>
<p>* <strong>interact </strong>: make the contact mutual, easy to dialogue and evolve from a &#8220;price and product monologue&#8221; to an &#8220;added value dialogue&#8221;</p>
<p>* <strong>individualize </strong>: take personal actions and motivations into account and install triggers in your database to honour these with the right message at the right time.</p>
<p>* <strong>inspire </strong>: bring the relation into new area&#8217;s and introduce your &#8216;family and friends&#8217;. (i.e. cross sales and up sales <img src='http://s0.wp.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> .  Take your loyal customers on a stimulating journey   Stimulate discussion amongst them to inspire each other.</p>
<p>* <strong>integrate </strong>: use the internet (even mobile) as an integrator of your relation. Let customers qualify themselves, capture their data and interactions and keep up the added value information supply (reviews, quotes, tips and tricks, news, blogs, tools to share things amongst each other,&#8230;).</p>
<p>* <strong>initiate </strong>: embrace the negative (as apathy is the biggest problem in love affairs) making it easy to initiate inbound questions and complaints. Qualify and handle these straight forward and don&#8217;t forget to track and trace them with endorsed follow up.  Act upon historic requests and deliver alerts of new information.</p>
<p>Technically speaking, just like in a long lasting love affair or a marriage, your loyalty program creates bonds at different levels : an emotional bond (where your customer feels appreciated and part of something bigger) a financial bond (remember to give real value and not only &#8220;rewards&#8221;) and a structural bond (mechanisms that encourage customers to stay with you and build exit barriers)</p>
<p>So, what is key to run a loyalty program and create bonds at all levels succesfully ?  Key is a database with a single customer view and actionable data.  Key is using data intelligence to create relevant customer segments in your database.  Key is to monitor each segment with KPI&#8217;s and a loyalty scheme adapted to each type of segment.  Key is to personalize your contact strategy using tools and cross channel media per type of customer type and type of message you want to pass along.</p>
<p>And yes : go beyond the call of duty for your love, do something he or she didn&#8217;t ask for and you will see : your love will not only be loyal but delighted !&#8217;</p>

<p>Carta+ wants to inform his customers about an important information release received earlier this month from the worldwide contactless chips supplier, NXP.<br />
Carta+ delivers <strong>exclusively</strong> NXP products for the <em>Mifare cards series</em>.<a href="http://cartaplus.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/nxp_logo.gif"><img class="size-full wp-image-81 alignright" title="nxp_logo" src="http://cartaplus.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/nxp_logo.gif?w=450" alt="Logo NXP, contactless cards"   /></a></p>
<p>&#8220;MIFARE Classic is one of the most widely used contactless smart card IC worldwide. It was invented in 1994 and first used in a public transport fare collection system in 1996. Today MIFARETM products are used in more than 650 cities in over 50 countries in more than 40 different applications globally. Increasingly also MIFARE Classic implementations on NXP’s SmartMX platform are deployed.<br />
Up to now MIFARE Classic ICs are featuring a unique identifier (UID) with the length of 4 Byte. With the accumulated and estimated global demand of MIFARE Classic ICs, we expect that the market will run out of 4 Byte unique IDs by the end of 2010.<br />
This will also impact the availability of 4B UIDs for MIFARE Classic implementations of NXP and our licensees on dual interface ICs, contactless SIMs and secure elements. In order to facilitate the migration of certified SmartMX and licensee products, NXP will provide a limited number of 4B unique IDs for these products until end of 2012 depending on estimated and accumulated demand and availability.<br />
NXP acknowledges that the uniqueness of IDs is typically an important element of many contactless system designs. Precautions need to be implemented for non unique IDs in automatic fare collection, closed loop payment and access management applications with respect to the following:<br />
· back office reconciliation<br />
· blacklisting of cards<br />
· card access right management</p>
<p>Therefore NXP offers the following options to ensure sustainable operation of MIFARE Classic installations:<br />
1. NXP will offer MIFARE Classic ICs with 7 Byte unique IDs (7B UIDs)1 as the recommended product solution. Sample cards for design in activities are available now. Volume production starts in Q2 2010.<br />
All NXP MIFARE ICs introduced after 2001 – MIFARE Ultralight, MIFARE Ultralight C, MIFARE DESFire, MIFARE DESFire EV1 and MIFARE Plus – already feature 7B<br />
UIDs. Therefore, many partners within the MIFARE eco-system are familiar with the use of 7B UIDs. 4B UID and 7B UID based smart cards can co-exist in the same infrastructure.<br />
MIFARE Plus was introduced with the option of 4 B UID for backwards compatibility during migration and a future proof 7B UID version.<br />
2. NXP will continue to offer MIFARE Classic and MIFARE Plus products but with 4 Byte identifiers taken from old NXP ID ranges instead of 4 Byte unique identifiers. The number ranges used for those 4 Byte identifiers will be chosen with maximum care to reduce the probability of duplicate IDs in your installations.<br />
NXP will collect and share best practices on how to handle non unique IDs through application notes, Q&amp;As, trainings and webinars.<br />
In addition, NXP will offer a downloadable list of the IC identifiers which are used for each reel or wafer. This enables pro-active impact analysis before issuing new cards into contactless systems.<br />
3. For applications that require a higher level of security, NXP recommends to migrate from MIFARE Classic to MIFARE Plus or MIFARE DESFire EV1 with 7B UIDs.<br />
4. MIFARE Classic and upcoming MIFARE Plus implementations on NXP’s SmartMX platform will also be available with 7B UIDs and 4 Byte identifiers taken from ID range<br />
xFh according to ISO/IEC 14443-3.<br />
For SmartMX products according to ISO/IEC 14443-4 without MIFARE emulations, 7B UID based solutions are already available since the year 2001 and widely used.<br />

<p>Next our first post in Dutch, from the loyalty martketing agency Dunck in the Netherland.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Het gebruik van loyaliteitsprogramma’s en   klantenkaarten heeft de laatste jaren een duidelijke vlucht genomen. Een   aantal initiatieven heeft succes, maar een deel ook niet. McKinsey   onderzocht succesvolle loyaliteitsprogramma’s. Op basis hiervan is een   stappenplan voor succes in retail loyalty ontwikkeld.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Stap  1: stel gerichte en realistische doelen</strong><br />
Het budget dient  zich te richten op klanten die het belangrijkst zijn.  Realistische  doelstellingen houden rekening met het beschikbare budget.</p>
<p><strong>Stap  2: durf te kiezen</strong><br />
Programma’s waarbij er geen duidelijke  keuzes worden gemaakt zijn  zelden succesvol. Een programma dat zich  richt op de massa kan niet  tegelijkertijd een exclusief karakter hebben.  Wat past het beste bij de  doelgroep en doelstelling?</p>
<p><strong>Stap  3: zorg voor onderscheidend vermogen</strong><br />
Klanten participeren  alleen als er sprake is van een duidelijke  toegevoegde waarde. De lage  marges vragen om creatieve oplossingen die  voor de klant voordeel  opleveren.</p>
<p><strong>Stap 4: implementeer met vaardigheid en  volharding</strong><br />
Succesvolle programma’s zijn succesvol door hun  eenvoud en genieten een  breed draagvlak bij zowel het personeel als het  management.&#8221;</p>
